IN TIMES OF COVID-19: ADAPTABILITY, COLLABORATION AND GOOD RESULTS
The COVID-19 crisis has driven us to boost our adaptability and ability to collaborate and engage in team-work with our clients. These last few weeks we have been working remotely as we had to innovate in many processes to respect the lockdown in place in the countries we operate in. That is why we wanted to share one of these experiences and the lessons learned.
On the weekend of March 14, in the light of the imminent onset of the COVID-19 epidemic, we had to coordinate in record time migrating a training session to a fully virtual format for a group of people in Montevideo. It was the induction required to start a new project. Training was going to be provided by our client, Mercado Libre, at its Montevideo offices, and we needed to get our ten new collaborators pass a quiz at the end of the process so as to certify that they were ready to operate in the Intellectual Property Project in Portuguese. We engaged in agile team-work with the client to try and find the way to continue as planned, despite uncertainty and difficulties.
FULLY REMOTE, GREAT-RESULTS TRAINING
“We were not experienced in virtual training but we got organized and did it. We used Meet to prepare the conferences and, to improve dynamics, the feedback provided by the Arbusta team of the Hispanic Intellectual Property Project, which had received training in February”, Tatiana Alvarez, MarketPlace Supervisor of Brand Protection at Mercado Libre, shared with us. “We all came up with values such as empathy and collaboration. A highlight in the teams’ efforts is the work of Lucía Vela, our trainer, who had to adjust all training dynamics in a rush”, Tatiana added.
“We used the shadowing method and set up small teams of two or three new analysts with people from the more experienced Hispanic team, so that they could see how the cases were resolved. This way, training was more focused on practice and more dynamic and we empowered born leaders”, Tatiana Álvarez explained. The outcome of this training was even better than that of the face-to-face training a few months ago for another team. One hundred per cent (100%) of the team passed the final quiz and was ready to start working.
“The way difficulties were overcome with cooperation, patience and flexibility was a highlight in this experience. We managed to prove that every one of us may, when facing challenges, unveil their ability to act with empathy for the other, collaborate and innovate”, said Beatriz Ponce de León, Country Manager of Arbusta Uruguay.

REMOTE TEAM MANAGEMENT: GOOD PRACTICES
The synergy between the Arbusta and Mercado Libre teams in the Hispanic and Portuguese Intellectual Property Projects continues to flow dynamically despite the distance. “We use all the communication and remote work tools we have at hand: especially Meet and Slack. When we don’t see each other face to face, only words are left. So, for good remote team management, it is important to set daily and weekly objectives, and reinforcing dialogue is of the essence”, Tatiana added.
